In the mid 1970s, Paul Newman was interviewed on a television chat show about his social and political opinions. Newman was candid but seemed slightly ill-at-ease, and eventually exclaimed “Oh come on. People don’t want to hear this. Let’s talk about movies and glamour and Gina Lollobrigida!” The audience all laughed. What is significant about this, apart from Paul Newman’s lack of self-importance, is that he cited Gina Lollobrigida, with whom he had never worked. He did not cite a Hollywood glamour girl, nor an Italian actress he had worked with, like Sophia Loren or Pier Angeli. He named Gina Lollobrigida. more …
